Home Corona and Plasma products Why surface treatment?
Why surface treatment?
It is often necessary to bond plastic materials to metals or other plastic materials or simply print a plastic surface. In order to successfully accomplish this, the liquid adhesive, or ink should be able to wet the surface of the material. Wettability depends on one specific property of the surface: Surface Energy, often referred to as Surface Tension, which is measured in mN/m or dynes/cm.

However, the poor wettability of these polymers presents the designer with the problem of bonding or decorating materials made from them. Plasma and corona surface treatment can improve wettability of the material by raising its surface energy and improve adhesive characteristics by creating bonding sites. The most advanced and successful methods of surface treatment are based on a principle of high voltage discharge through air or under vacuum pressure.

Corona or Plasma Surface Treatment is modification of polymer surfaces with electrical discharge. The Corona or Plasma process creates the necessary polar functional groups on the polymer surface, which promote adhesion and wettability
