Autoform boosts production efficiency with innovative plasma treatment
Autoform, one of Europe’s leading manufacturers of vacuum formed products, continues to push the boundaries of innovation in its production processes. Specializing in products such as boot lids, roof boxes and wind deflectors, the company has a rich history of combining craftsmanship with advanced technology to meet the growing demands of the automotive industry.
A journey of expertise
One of the key people at Autoform is Daniel Helmersson, he brings a wealth of experience. Originally trained as a welder, mechanic and later electrician, Daniel’s career evolved with the ever-changing technical demands of the industry. He has complemented his expertise with a master’s degree in automation and robotics, and his background reflects Autoform’s broader commitment to innovation and technical excellence.
Adhesion challenges
Autoform encountered a significant challenge in its efforts to automate the attachment of adhesive-based products to certain products. To ensure the adhesive would stick reliably, they needed to increase the surface energy of the materials, which is traditionally achieved through chemical treatments. But Daniel and the Autoform team sought a solution that was not only effective, but also environmentally conscious.
‘Plasma was a natural choice for us,’ explains Daniel Helmersson. ‘It allows us to apply the coating at high speed, with precise control and without the use of harmful chemicals.’
The Tantec solution
Having already implemented a Tantec corona treatment system on another production line, Autoform was confident in choosing Tantec for this new challenge. Tantec plasma technology was the ideal solution to improve the surface energy of the adhesive-based parts while supporting Autoform’s goal of automating the process.
By integrating Tantec’s plasma system, Autoform was able to achieve the desired surface energy and ensure strong adhesive bonds while improving automation capabilities. ‘Plasma is very suitable for use with robots,’ adds Daniel. ‘It allows us to reduce the workload for our operators while maintaining a high production rate.’
Concrete benefits
The results of incorporating Tantec plasma technology into Autoform’s production process have been impressive. ‘We’ve seen significant increases in productivity and better control of product quality,’ says Daniel. ‘In addition, removing hazardous chemicals from our process has greatly improved the working environment and we have saved costs by no longer having to buy primer.’
The benefits go beyond cost savings. The plasma treatment system has streamlined production and laid the groundwork for future innovations. Autoform is already exploring further applications of plasma technology for other products that require bonding.
A sustainable and efficient future
The partnership with Tantec continues to grow as the company considers new plasma applications for improved production efficiency. ‘Plasma not only increases our productivity, but also helps us maintain a more sustainable and environmentally friendly production environment,’ Daniel concludes.
When asked if he would recommend Tantec’s solutions to others, Daniel is clear: ‘Yes, absolutely. Tantec plasma technology has been instrumental in improving our operations. It’s a solution that combines productivity, quality and environmental responsibility.’
