How Flonidan optimized a crucial aspect by 50%

Flonidan, a leading developer and manufacturer of gas meters for the European and Asian markets, has experienced significant production improvements by implementing Tantec’s plasma surface treatment solutions.

Flonidan wanted to streamline their complex production process, but one challenge stood in their way. Here is how they did it:

The challenge: Switching from a bolted assembly to a bonding assembly for increased efficiency
Flonidan faced a challenge to optimize the bonding between their plastic components and steel vessels in gas meters. Previously, the components were assembled using bolted joints – a method that is standard in the industry. To reduce production time while ensuring a strong and durable bond, Flonidan decided to switch to hot melt bonding.

Testing during the development phase
Having attended several of Tantec’s seminars and previously collaborated on bonding Vortex generators, Flonidan was familiar with Tantec’s surface treatment capabilities.

“The good service was a decisive factor for us, because we had the opportunity to visit Tantec upfront and have tests performed during the development phase,” says Jesper Vastrup Knudsen, mechanical engineer specializing in plastic materials and processes

Finding the right solution early on
Choosing the right adhesive and a stable production process is crucial as the products have a guaranteed lifetime of 15 years. After investigating different methods, including mechanical processing and the use of primer products, Flonidan chose to test Tantec’s surface treatment solution before deciding to invest in the conversion.

“We have made use of the option to rent the equipment to verify the process before purchasing stations for our mass production. It is very important to clarify and select the right solution at an early stage.”

Tantec’s technological strength in robotic programming and surface design optimization also played a significant role in the decision-making process.

The result: Significant improvement in production process
With the implementation of Tantec’s plasma treatment stations, Flonidan has achieved significantly better adhesion between the adhesive and their surfaces, with an improvement of up to 40-50% in the strength of the glue joint.

“The plasma treatment ensures a cleaner metal surface and increases surface tension, resulting in a more durable bond. Production has therefore become more efficient with faster processing times and improved handling through fixtures and drawer systems in the plasma stations,” says Jesper.

The successful implementation of Tantec’s technology has led to the production of thousands of units – without complaints.
